History and character
A strand of techno built on hypnotic repetition, on the very slow transformation of patterns and textures, and on a meditative, immersive atmosphere. It has roots in Detroit techno and '90s minimal (Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Basic Channel), but as a recognizable sound it crystallized in the 2000s and 2010s with the Italian Donato Dozzy (with Neel in the Voices From The Lake project, self-titled album of 2012 on Prologue), Peter Van Hoesen (Time To Express), Svreca and Architectural (Semantica), Abdulla Rashim and Varg (Northern Electronics), Mike Parker, Rrose, Polar Inertia, Luigi Tozzi and the Roman scene.
It is associated with long sets (4 hours and more), with festivals like Labyrinth in Japan, and with strong scenes in Italy, Germany, Romania and Georgia. Since February 2020 Beatport has gathered it (with raw and deep) in the “Techno (Raw / Deep / Hypnotic)” category. Recent trends: world elements, polyrhythms, live instruments, fusions with dub techno, ambient and IDM.
Aesthetic: trance through accumulation and subtraction, deep space, cyclical sounds that “turn” on top of one another, no abrupt peaks.
Scales and keys
Convention: Roman numerals refer to the major scale on the same tonic (uppercase = major, lowercase = minor, ° diminished, ø half-diminished, + augmented; b/# = degree lowered/raised relative to major: in A minor F = bVI, G = bVII). The notes and chords below are calculated exactly from the formula.
Pedal and minor pentatonic
- Formula: 1 b3 4 5 b7 — steps: T+S T T T+S T
- On F: F Ab Bb C Eb
- Characteristic note: no semitone: sequences that rotate without friction for minutes.
- Use: 3–5-note sequences in odd patterns (5/16, 7/16) over the 4/4.
- Common mistakes: sequences that are too “musical” and draw attention.
Dorian
- Formula: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 — steps: T S T T T S T
- On F: F G Ab Bb C D Eb
- Diatonic triads: Fm i · Gm ii · Ab bIII · Bb IV · Cm v · Ddim vi° · Eb bVII
- Seventh chords: Fm7 i7 · Gm7 ii7 · Abmaj7 bIIImaj7 · Bb7 IV7 · Cm7 v7 · Dm7b5 viø7 · Ebmaj7 bVIImaj7
- Characteristic note: the major sixth (D): light and openness in the textures.
- Use: pads and drones with 6 and 9, sequences that touch the 6.
- Common mistakes: pads that are too harmonic.
Phrygian
- Formula: 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 — steps: S T T T S T T
- On F: F Gb Ab Bb C Db Eb
- Diatonic triads: Fm i · Gb bII · Ab bIII · Bbm iv · Cdim v° · Db bVI · Ebm bvii
- Seventh chords: Fm7 i7 · Gbmaj7 bIImaj7 · Ab7 bIII7 · Bbm7 iv7 · Cm7b5 vø7 · Dbmaj7 bVImaj7 · Ebm7 bvii7
- Characteristic note: the b2 (Gb): shadow and mystery.
- Use: drones with semitone beating, dark sequences.
- Common mistakes: too much drama: hypnosis wants balance.
Lydian (suspended colors)
- Formula: 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 — steps: T T T S T T S
- On F: F G A B C D E
- Diatonic triads: F I · G II · Am iii · Bdim #iv° · C V · Dm vi · Em vii
- Seventh chords: Fmaj7 Imaj7 · G7 II7 · Am7 iii7 · Bm7b5 #ivø7 · Cmaj7 Vmaj7 · Dm7 vi7 · Em7 vii7
- Characteristic note: the #4 (B): “cosmic” suspension.
- Use: drones and pads with #4 and 9 for spacey atmospheres.
- Common mistakes: using it with basses that insist on the natural 4.
How to choose between scales
The tonal center is provided by the kick, rumble and drone; the sequences use the pentatonic or the mode chosen for color (Dorian = open, Phrygian = dark, Lydian = suspended). A good exercise: hold the drone steady on F and change only the sequence's mode every 64 bars.
Harmony
Function
Static and modal: drone, pedal, textures; the harmonic interest comes from the layering of cycles of notes that produce shifting harmonies (melodic polyrhythm).
Techniques
- Sequences of different lengths (e.g. 5, 7 and 16 steps) on the same scale: the combinations change for many bars.
- Drones with open intervals (fifths, fourths, ninths).
- Filters and resonances that bring out different harmonics.
- Tempo-synced delay that duplicates the notes.
Harmonic rhythm
Static; changes come through layering.
Examples
- F5 drone + 7-step pentatonic sequence.
- Fm(add9) distant pad + 5-step sequence.
Typical progressions
| Name | Key | Chords | Degrees | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drone | F minor | F5 | i5 | An open dyad for the whole track; the movement is in the sequences and filters. |
| Suspended ninth | F minor | Fmadd9 | iadd9 | Distant pad with the 9: atmosphere, not harmony. |
| Dorian in texture | F minor (Dorian) | Fm6 | i6 | The Dorian sixth (D) opens up the color. |
| Cosmic Lydian | F major (Lydian) | Fmaj7#11 | Imaj7#11 | Suspended, spacey color for the most ambient moments. |
Rhythm and groove
- Feel: straight and fluid, light swing (52–55%) on the percs; everything soft and “round.”
- Polymeter: percussion patterns and sequences of 3/16, 5/16, 7/16 over the 4/4.
- Accents: steady but not aggressive kick, rumble on the offbeats, hats on the offbeat, clap rare or absent.
- Evolution: continuous micro-variations (decay, cutoff, panning), big changes every 32–64 bars.
Drums
Kick
On the quarter notes, round and deep, with reverbed rumble on the offbeats; fundamental 45–55 Hz; little click.
Clap and snare
Often absent; in their place rim, woodblocks, synthetic percs; a distant clap only on 4.
Hi-hat
Soft offbeat hats, low sixteenth-note hats, synthetic shaker; automated decays.
Percussion
Synthetic percs (FM, soft metallic), filtered toms, odd loops; lots of panning and delay.
Dynamics and ghost notes
Velocities varied with slow LFOs; ghost notes on the percs.
Interaction with the bass
The rumble is the bass; soft bass sequences between the kicks.
Sections
No clear sections: slow entrances/exits of layers, brief or absent breakdowns.
Fills and transitions
None; transitions through filters and sends.
Choosing sounds
Soft 909, filtered samples, synthetic percs; everything a little “distant.”
Typical mistakes
Claps and snares that are too loud; peak-time drops and builds; elements that never change.
Bass
- Sound: rumble (kick + reverb + saturation + LP), soft sub, short FM bass sequences.
- Register: F1–F2.
- With the kick: on the offbeats; 6–10 dB sidechain.
- Notes: tonic.
Harmonic instruments
Drones, distant pads, granular textures, synth sequences; everything filtered and immersed in reverb.
Melody and vocals
- Melody: cyclical sequences of a few notes, often odd-numbered.
- Vocal: rare: fragments, whispers.
- Effects: tempo-synced delay (3/16, dotted eighth), long reverbs, granular, slow modulations (phaser, chorus).
Instruments
Modulars (Eurorack), analog and FM synths, drum machines (909, Elektron), polymetric sequencers, delays and reverbs, field recordings.
Drum patterns
Synths and sounds
- Modular V — Polymetric sequences: Sequencer with different lengths and unsynchronized LFOs on the filter: hypnotic cycles.
- Buchla Easel V — Organic percs and textures: Low pass gate and complex oscillator for soft, “liquid” sounds.
- ARP 2600 V — Sequences and FX: Slow S&H on the filter for controlled random variations.
- DX7 V — FM percs and bells: Short, soft FM sounds for sequences and percs.
- Synthi V — Drone: Drone and textures with the matrix.
- Jup-8 V — Distant pads: Dark pads with slow attack.

6–10-minute tracks designed for long sets.
Mixing and mastering
Sonic goal
Deep and enveloping: round low end (kick + rumble) in mono, sequences and textures spatialized across several planes of depth, soft highs. References: Voices From The Lake — Voices From The Lake (2012), Prologue, Semantica and Northern Electronics productions.
Kick
HP 25 Hz; +2 dB at 50 Hz; −3 dB at 300 Hz; LP 10 kHz; light saturation; mono.
Rumble
Kick reverb (hall 3–6 s) → saturation → LP 150–200 Hz → sidechain 8–10 dB; mono.
Hi-hat and perc
HP 500 Hz; LP 12 kHz; 3/16 and dotted-eighth delay; wide, automated panning (slow auto-pan); short room/hall for depth.
Sequences and textures
HP 150–250 Hz; −2 dB at 400 Hz; long filtered reverbs (4–8 s); ping-pong delay; wide; sidechain 3–6 dB; slow automation (cutoff, decay, sends).
Vocal/fragments
HP 200 Hz; lots of reverb; distant.
Buses and groups
Soft drum bus (glue 2:1, GR 1–2 dB), mono low-end bus, sidechained FX bus.
Sidechain
Rumble 8–10 dB, textures 3–6 dB, reverbs 4–6 dB.
Master
EQ → tape → 1–2 dB compressor → limiter. Target −9/−8 LUFS integrated, true peak −1 dBTP, crest factor 8–11 dB.
Common mistakes
Flat mix (everything at the same distance); harsh hats; reverbs that clog 200–500 Hz; peak-time loudness.
