How to play it and where it comes from

Happy hardcore / 4-beat (UK, from 1993–1994 onward: Slipmatt, DJ Seduction, Hixxy, Force & Styles) at around 170 BPM (median 170 across 532 tracks measured by Mixgraph; range 160–175). Saturated 909 kick on the quarter notes, open hat on the offbeat that locks in with the offbeat "oom-pah" bass, snare on 2 and 4 and closed hats in sixteenths. In the first wave a sped-up breakbeat ran under the kick (a legacy of breakbeat hardcore); from the mid-1990s the breaks were dropped in favor of a distorted 909 kick and stabs. Fills: snare roll in sixteenths/thirty-seconds in the last half bar (only hinted at here), a rising piano roll, crash on the return of the chorus.
