How to play it and where it comes from

Hardstyle (the Netherlands/Italy, late 1990s) at 148–155: distorted, tuned kick ("punch" attack + saturated, pitched tail) on the quarter notes, which often carries the bass melody on its own. The 808 lane represents the offbeat "reverse bass" of the early style, today replaced by long kicks. Clap on 2 and 4, open hat on the offbeat. Variants: rawstyle (150–160, dirtier kicks), "three-hit" kick in the drops, melodic kickless breaks with supersaw leads.
