Mixing by genre

J-pop and anisong

Character of the mix

J-pop and anime theme songs (anisong) have extremely dense arrangements: a full band (fast drums, very active bass, multiple guitars), piano, strings, synths, horns, backing vocals, frequent key and tempo changes, high and fast vocal melodies. The mix must keep the vocals clear in front of a wall of instruments, with bright high frequencies and very high loudness. Electronic productions (YOASOBI, Kenshi Yonezu) use programmed drums and synth basses.

Typical balance

ElementLevel relative to the mix
Vocals−4/−6 LU
Drums (together)−6/−8 LU
Bass−8/−10 LU (very present in the mids)
Guitars−8/−10 LU
Piano, strings, synths−9/−12 LU each

EQ

  • Vocals: HP 120–150 Hz (high voices), presence 3–6 kHz, air; precise de-essing.
  • Bass: fast, melodic lines, mids 700 Hz–2 kHz for legibility.
  • Guitars and piano: high HP (120–200 Hz), cuts at 2–4 kHz for the vocals.
  • Strings and synths: HP 200 Hz, air; room in the vocal range.
  • The density makes managing 200–500 Hz crucial.

Dynamics

  • Vocals: serial compression 8–12 dB, accurate riding for the fast phrases.
  • Drums: sharp transients, glue.
  • Instrumental compressed as a group, dynamic EQ sidechained from the vocals.
  • Very loud master.

Space and stereo image

  • Vocals in the center, very present, with controlled delays and reverbs.
  • Wide guitars, strings and synths filling the sides, wide backing vocals.
  • Mono low end.

Reference loudness

Master −7/−5 LUFS (the Japanese market has traditionally had very loud masters), true peak −1/−0.3 dBTP.

Common mistakes

  • Vocals buried by the arrangement: you need to carve out space in the instruments.
  • 200–500 Hz piled up by too many instruments.
  • Bass without mids: the melodic line is lost.
  • Harsh highs from chasing brightness.

How to check the result

  • Master crest factor 5–7 dB.
  • Low-mids band no higher than the Bass band.
  • High-mids and Presence bands: the vocals stand out in every section.
  • Correlation +0.2/+0.7; low bands mono.
