History and character
Definition
"Contemporary R&B" here means R&B from the 2010s to today, closely intertwined with trap, pop, afrobeats and Latin music. After the electro-R&B era of the late 2000s (Usher and Chris Brown moving toward EDM), the dominant sound became more intimate and minimal: slowed-down trap drums, soft 808s, dark pads, layered vocals.
Key artists
Bryson Tiller's "Trapsoul" (2015) set a formula, followed by H.E.R. ("H.E.R.", 2017), Summer Walker ("Over It", 2019), SZA ("Ctrl", 2017; "SOS", 2022, with "Kill Bill" and "Snooze" at the top of the charts), Giveon ("Heartbreak Anniversary", 2020), Daniel Caesar, Brent Faiyaz, Lucky Daye, Jhené Aiko, Chris Brown, Ella Mai ("Boo'd Up", 2018), Victoria Monét ("On My Mama", 2023), Tems and afro-R&B. Producers such as Hit-Boy, Boi-1da, Rob Bisel, Carter Lang, London on da Track, D'Mile.
Aesthetic
Nocturnal, minimal production: dark pads, Rhodes, clean guitars, soft 808s, hi-hats with light rolls, layered vocals with light Auto-Tune as color. Intimate, confessional, often diary-like lyrics; great attention to "vibe" and timbre rather than vocal power. In parallel, a return to 90s and 2000s R&B sounds (samples, interpolations, nostalgia).
Scales and keys
Natural minor with extensions
- Formula: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 (2-1-2-2-1-2-2).
- Example in B: B C# D E F# G A.
- Chords: Bm9 (B D F# A C#) – C#m7b5 – Dmaj7 – Em9 – F#m7 – Gmaj7 – A7.
- Use: the typical key of nocturnal tracks; i–VI–iv, i9–VImaj7.
Major with sevenths and ninths
- Formula: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. In D: D E F# G A B C#.
- Chords: Dmaj9 – Em9 – F#m7 – Gmaj9 – A13 – Bm9 – C#m7b5.
- Use: brighter choruses, IV–iii–vi–ii descents.
Dorian
- In E: E F# G A B C# D; the major IV (A9) adds warmth.
- Use: soft grooves, R&B with neo soul influences.
Pentatonic and blues (voice)
- Minor pentatonic in B: B D E F# A; blues: B D E F F# A.
- Use: controlled, short melismas, far less virtuosic than in the 90s.
Harmonic minor
- In B: B C# D E F# G A#; the F#7 at the cadence.
- Use: melancholic tension in pre-choruses.
How to choose
| Mood | Scale |
|---|---|
| Nocturnal, intimate | Aeolian with 9 |
| Bright, romantic | major with maj9 |
| Warm, groove | Dorian |
| Tension | harmonic minor on the V |
Harmony
4-chord extended loops
Loops of 4 chords with sevenths and ninths, often diatonic and without perfect cadences (IV–iii–vi–ii, i–VI–iv–V). Harmony that supports the voice, medium density (one chord per bar at 70 BPM).
Borrowings and colors
- Borrowed minor iv (IVmaj7–iv7).
- Suspended V that doesn't resolve (Vsus4).
- Slash chords (V/IV).
- Return of 90s progressions (IV–iii–vi–ii–V) in nostalgic productions (Victoria Monét, Lucky Daye).
Voicing
Pads and Rhodes with 4–5 note voicings in the middle register, guitars with extensions (maj9, m11), vocal harmonies that complete the chord.
Harmonic rhythm
Slow: one chord per bar or per two bars; in the choruses sometimes two per bar.
Typical progressions
| Name | Key | Chords | Degrees | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nocturnal loop | D major | Gmaj7 F#m7 Bm7 Em7 A7 | IVmaj7 iii7 vi7 ii7 V7 | Descent and soft cadence: a classic of R&B mid-tempos, a legacy of the 90s. |
| Minor with dominant | B minor | Bm9 Gmaj7 Em9 F#7 | i9 VImaj7 iv9 V7 | The F#7 from harmonic minor adds melancholy and tension. |
| Suspended | Ab major | Dbmaj9 Cm7 Fm9 Ebsus4 | IVmaj9 iii7 vi9 Vsus4 | The suspended V doesn't resolve, keeping the loop open. |
| Two intimate chords | F# minor | F#m9 Dmaj9 | i9 VImaj9 | Minimal: all the space to the voice (SZA, Brent Faiyaz). |
| Borrowed iv | Eb major | Ebmaj7 Abmaj7 Abm6 Ebmaj7 | Imaj7 IVmaj7 iv6 Imaj7 | Bittersweet: the iv6 (Ab Cb Eb F) colors the return to the I. |
| 90s nostalgia | C major | Fmaj9 Em7 Am9 Dm9 G13 | IVmaj9 iii7 vi9 ii9 V13 | The 90s slow jam revived in the nostalgic R&B of the 2020s. |
Rhythm and groove
Feel
Half time with trap hi-hats (eighth notes, sixteenth notes, triplets), relaxed and spacious groove; sometimes light swing or afrobeats influences (percussion patterns in 3+3+2) and Latin influences (light dembow).
Variants
- Trap R&B: clap on 3, 808, hats with rolls.
- Afro-R&B: 95–110 BPM, kick and shaker in afrobeats patterns.
- Nostalgic R&B: 90s groove with 54–58% swing.
Voice
Relaxed phrases, often behind the beat, sing-rap.
Drums
Kick
Soft and sparse (steps 1, 8, 11 or coinciding with the 808); sometimes absent.
Clap / snap / snare
On 3 (half time) or on 2 and 4; layered snaps and claps; medium reverb.
Hi-hat
Rolls and triplets but less aggressive than trap; soft velocities; frequent rests.
Percussion
Rim, shaker, light percussion; in afro-R&B log drum and shaker.
Interaction
Lots of space: the drums pull back under the voice. In the verses, filtered or reduced drums.
Sections
Intro with no drums; reduced verse; full chorus; bridge with a stop or groove change.
Typical mistakes
Hats too dense; clap too bright; too many percussive elements.
Bass
- Soft, long 808, filtered (LP 300–500 Hz), following the root with small slides; or sine synth bass.
- Volume under the voice, sub in mono.
- Notes: root, sometimes the 9th or b7 for softer voicings.
- In nostalgic R&B: 90s electric bass or synth bass.
Harmonic instruments
- Dark pads, piano or Rhodes with reverb.
- Clean electric guitar with chorus (arpeggios, extended chords).
- Synthetic strings.
- Synth plucks and bells.
- Extended voicings in the middle register.
Melody and vocals
- Voice: intimate, mid register with falsetto, controlled melismas; timbre and "vibe" before power.
- Backing vocals: stacks (harmonies in thirds and sixths), vocal pads, octave doubles.
- Ad-libs: reverbed, panned.
- Effects: light Auto-Tune as color, plate, delay, sometimes vocoder or pitch shift.
Instruments
Voice, backing vocals, 808, drum machine, synth pads, piano, Rhodes, electric guitar, synthetic strings, percussion.
Drum patterns
Synths and sounds

- Augmented Voices — Vocal pads: Support for vocal harmonies with choir textures.
- Wurli V — Warm electric piano: For the more 'vintage' and nostalgic productions.

Mixing and mastering
Sonic goal
Voice up front and intimate, wide backing vocals, controlled 808, pads in the background; a dark mix but with air on the voice. References: SZA "SOS" (2022), H.E.R. "Focus" (2016), Giveon "Heartbreak Anniversary" (2020). Balance: vocal 0, backing vocals −4, 808 −4, clap −7, pad −9.

Clap / snap
HP 250 Hz; crack 2 kHz; LP 10–12 kHz; plate 1.5 s at −14 dB.
Hi-hat and percussion
HP 700 Hz; low volume; pan ±15–30.

- Compression: FET 4–6 dB + opto 3 dB.
- De-esser: 6–8 kHz.
- Space: plate 1.5 s at −16 dB, 1/4 delay at −18 dB.
- Automation: level rider, delay throws.
Backing vocals
HP 150 Hz; compression 6–8 dB; strong de-esser; symmetrical pan ±40–100; shared hall.
Bus, sidechain, master
Vocal bus 1–2 dB; music bus glue; dynamic EQ vocal → music. Master −10/−8 LUFS integrated, true peak −1 dBTP.
Common mistakes
