How to play it and where it comes from
Modern R&B between 60 and 90: backbeat on 2 and 4 with layered snare and clap (or finger snap), syncopated kick that leaves room for the voice (1, the last sixteenth of 2, the "and" of 3). Sixteenth-note hi-hats "with holes," with small rolls and an open hat before the turnaround. Off-beat rim/perc add movement without filling. Light swing (15). Variants: triplet hats in the verses (trap influence), 808 in place of the bass, snare with long reverb in the choruses.
