How to play it and where it comes from
The mother pattern of club music (Chicago house, disco): kick on all four quarter notes, clap (or snare) on 2 and 4, open hat on every offbeat (the "tss" that drives it), closed hat in eighths. The kick should be short and clean to leave room for the offbeat bass; sidechain on the bass and pads. Variants: sixteenth-note hats, shaker, tambourine on the offbeats, rolled clap at the end of an 8-bar phrase.
