How to play it and where it comes from

Djent (Meshuggah, Periphery, Animals as Leaders): the snare and cymbals stay fixed in 4/4 (half-time snare on 3, ride/china on the quarter notes), while the kick and guitars repeat a motif of odd length (here 5 sixteenths: "x.x..") that slides against the bar and "realigns" after several cycles. The motif here restarts every 5 steps; the last piece ("xx") closes the two bars. Very compressed 7–8-string guitar sound. Variants: motifs of 7 or 9 sixteenths, "normal" 4/4 sections for contrast, snare ghost notes.
