How to play it and where it comes from

The engine of anime theme songs and fast J-rock (LiSA, Aimer, Kenshi Yonezu, Vocaloid rock tracks at 150–200 BPM): 8-beat drums with an anticipating kick (1, “1 a”, “2 e”, 3) and snare on 2 and 4; in the second bar, crash on 1 and a final sixteenth-note roll for the next phrase. In the choruses it moves to open hats or eighth-note ride, a crash every 2 bars and sometimes kick in four or in eighths (double kick in the harder J-rock). Variants: punk “2-beat” (kick on the beat, snare on the offbeats) in the fastest choruses; half-time sections in the bridge; a guitar break with the drums stopped. LiSA's Gurenge is at 135 BPM, many Vocaloid tracks exceed 170.
