What it is and how it works
A thermionic tube amplifies by controlling the flow of electrons between cathode and plate with a grid. Its transfer curve is curved and soft: as the signal grows, the gain falls gradually instead of stopping abruptly. The result is progressive soft clipping, with harmonics that grow gently.
- Single-ended stages (one tube, typical of triode preamps such as the 12AX7/ECC83): asymmetric curve → strong 2nd harmonic (octave above) and 3rd. This is tube "warmth": a fuller, rounder, "sweeter" sound.
- Push-pull stages (two tubes in opposite phase, typical of power amps and some amplifiers): even harmonics cancel, leaving the odd ones (3rd, 5th): a more aggressive, "dense" sound.
- Triode versus pentode: the triode is softer and more linear; the pentode (e.g. EF86) has more gain and saturates more decisively and brightly.
- Starved plate (low plate voltage): the tube distorts sooner and dirtier; many "color" saturators emulate it.
- Tube equipment often has input and output transformers, which saturate mainly in the lows (harmonics and light compression below 100 Hz): part of the "tube" sound comes from there.
Emulation parameters
- Drive / Input: input level into the tube. Barely perceptible saturation = 1–2% total harmonic distortion (THD), obvious = 5–10%, overdrive beyond that.
- Bias / Asymmetry: shifts the operating point: more asymmetry = more 2nd harmonic; it also generates DC offset (needs an HP at 10–20 Hz).
- Tube type / style: triode, pentode, "warm", "clean tube".
- Tone / EQ: many emulations include a low-pass after the tube that softens the highs (Decapitator has Tone and High Cut; Saturn 2 has per-band tone controls).
- Mix: parallel; often 30–70%.
- Output: compensation.
- Oversampling: 2–4× at high drive.
Tools
- FL Studio stock: there is no dedicated tube emulation. Approximations: Fruity Delay 3 with Delay Model "Off" (filter, saturation, limit, sample rate and bit stay active) and Feedback Distortion Sat with a soft Knee (described in the manual as "tube" behavior) and Symmetry shifted for even harmonics; Fruity WaveShaper with a rounded, asymmetric curve; Distructor (Harmor Softsat model, Blood Overdrive); Fruity Blood Overdrive with low Pre Amp.
- Third party: Soundtoys Decapitator (styles A, E, N, T, P: T and P emulate a triode and a pentode tube saturator) and Radiator (tube mixer), FabFilter Saturn 2 (Tube mode), UAD Thermionic Culture Vulture, Manley and Pultec (tube color even without EQ), Waves Kramer HLS and J37, Arturia Pre V76 (tube preamp), Klanghelm IVGI (free, more generic "analog"), Softube Saturation Knob (free), Kush Omega.
When to use it and on what
- Vocals: warmth and presence, density without obvious compression. Light drive, mix 30–50%.
- Electric bass and synth bass: even harmonics that make the bass audible, roundness.
- 808: soft saturation on the low-mid part (above 80–100 Hz) for audibility on phones, without the harshness of a clipper.
- Electric piano, organ, pads: "vintage" warmth.
- Vocal bus and music bus: light saturation for cohesion.
- Drum bus (pentode, more aggressive): density and "grit".
- Master: very light tube (Manley, Pultec, Kush) for color.
Starting settings
| Source | Style | Drive | Mix | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pop/R&B vocals | triode, warm | low (THD 1–2%) | 30–50% | before the final de-esser |
| Aggressive rap vocals | pentode | medium | 40–70% | then EQ −2 dB at 3–4 kHz if harsh |
| Bass | triode | medium | 50–100% | HP on the sidechain of any compressors after |
| 808 | triode or warm | medium, above 100 Hz | 100% on the high band | multiband: clean sub |
| Rhodes/Wurli | triode | medium | 50–100% | "amp" sound |
| Drum bus | pentode | medium | 20–40% | parallel |
| Mix bus/master | clean triode | minimal | 100% or 20–40% | 0.5–1 dB of smoothed peaks |
By genre
- Soul, R&B, neo-soul, jazz-hop: tube on vocals, Rhodes, bass: warm, "old" sound.
- Rock: tube in the amps and preamps; in the mix on vocals and bass.
- Trap, drill: tube saturation or overdrive on the 808 as a signature of the sound.
- Pop: light color on vocals and bus.
- Electronic: pentode and high drive on drum loops and synths for character.
Common mistakes
- High drive on an already bright vocal: sibilance and harshness (de-esser after).
- Strong asymmetry without HP: DC offset that reduces the limiter's headroom.
- Saturating the whole 808 signal (sub included): intermodulation and notes that "buzz".
- Many tube instances on tracks, buses and master: accumulation of harmonics in the upper mids, dull mix.
- Not compensating: louder seems nicer.
How to hear it
- With a 100 Hz sine wave, look at the spectrum: do you see the peak at 200 Hz (2nd) prevail over the one at 300 Hz (3rd)? That is even-order, "tube" saturation.
- On a vocal: raise the drive until the consonants become "dirty", then back off: only a denser, closer body should remain.
Starting settings
| Parameter | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drive | THD 1–2% (color), 5–10% (obvious) | Warmth without audible distortion. |
| Asymmetry/bias | Light | More 2nd harmonic, more warmth. |
| Mix | 30–70% | Density in parallel. |
| Anti-DC HP | 10–20 Hz after the asymmetric saturation | Removes the offset. |
| Oversampling | 2–4× | Less aliasing at high drive. |
| Style | Triode for warmth, pentode for grit | Choose the character. |
Frequencies to watch
| Range | What to do |
|---|---|
| Below 100 Hz | Transformers saturate here: light bass compression; on the 808 keep the sub out of the saturation. |
| 100–500 Hz | Even harmonics of the basses: roundness and audibility. |
| 2–5 kHz | A pushed tube adds presence; beyond measure it becomes harsh: EQ after. |
| Above 10 kHz | Many emulations soften the highs (tone/high cut). |
Example chain
| Step | Tool | Settings | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrective EQ | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 | HP, cuts | Don't saturate mud and rumble. |
| Compression (before or after) | LA-2A / Fruity Compressor | GR 2–4 dB | Before: more consistent saturation; after: you control the harmonics. |
| Tube saturation | Decapitator (T/P) / Saturn 2 Tube / Culture Vulture / stock: Fruity Delay 3 Sat knee soft or WaveShaper | Low-medium drive, mix 30–70% | Even harmonics, warmth. |
| Post EQ | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 | −1/−3 dB at 2–5 kHz if harsh; HP 15 Hz anti-DC | Cleanup. |
| De-esser (vocals) | Pro-DS / Maximus | 5–9 kHz | Saturation raises the sibilants. |
How to check the result
- Spectrum with a test sine wave: 2nd harmonic dominant over the 3rd (tube character).
- Crest factor: drops by 0.5–2 dB with light saturation.
- No DC offset after asymmetric saturation.
- Matched loudness in the comparison with bypass.
