Character of the mix
Punk: energy, speed (150–200 BPM), distorted power-chord guitars, direct drums, bass doubling the guitars, shouted or melodic vocals. Pop punk (from the 1990s onward) adds cleaner production, doubled and tuned vocals, melodic choruses, layered guitars, and very defined drums often reinforced with samples. The mix should sound like a live band, but with modern clarity.
Typical balance
| Element | Level relative to the mix |
|---|---|
| Vocals | −5/−7 LU |
| Guitars (together) | −4/−6 LU |
| Snare | −7/−9 LU |
| Kick | −9/−11 LU |
| Bass | −9/−11 LU |
| Cymbals/overheads | −11/−14 LU |
EQ
- Guitars: HP 80–120 Hz, LP 9–12 kHz, cut 300–500 Hz (mud), control 2–4 kHz; two or four rhythm takes panned 100%.
- Bass: 60–100 Hz for weight, 700 Hz–1.5 kHz to hear the notes under the guitars; often distorted in parallel.
- Kick: pronounced click 3–6 kHz (it has to cut through the wall of guitars at fast tempos), weight 50–70 Hz.
- Snare: body 180–250 Hz, crack 3–5 kHz; reinforcement sample in pop punk.
- Vocals: HP 100–120 Hz, presence 2–5 kHz, saturation for energy.
Dynamics
- Drums: compression and decisive parallel; sharp kick and snare transients even at 180 BPM.
- Guitars: the distortion already compresses, minimal compression.
- Vocals: 6–10 dB (FET), saturation; in pop punk serial compression and tight doubles.
- Mix bus: glue 2–3 dB.
Space and stereo image
- Rhythm guitars 100% wide; vocals, bass, kick, and snare in the center.
- Short or no reverbs on the guitars; drum room for energy; short plate or slapback on the vocals.
- Pop punk: tight vocal doubles (±20–40%) in the choruses, wide gang vocals.
Layering
- Guitars: 2 takes per side with different amps or pickups; optional high octaves for the choruses.
- Drums: mics + samples for kick and snare, aligned in phase.
- Vocals: lead + double + harmony; gang vocals in the choruses.
Reference loudness
Classic remastered punk −10/−8 LUFS; modern pop punk −8/−6 LUFS. True peak −1 dBTP.
Reference tracks
Ramones “Blitzkrieg Bop”, Green Day “Basket Case”, Blink-182 “All the Small Things”, Paramore “Misery Business”, Olivia Rodrigo “good 4 u”.
Common mistakes
- Guitars with too much low end: the bass disappears.
- Kick without click: at 180 BPM it becomes a rumble.
- Vocals too clean and distant for the genre.
- Excessive limiting: the cymbals turn into a haze.

| Master | Glue → limiter | −8/−6 LUFS | Level. |
How to check the result
- Master crest factor 6–9 dB.
- Correlation +0.1/+0.5 (very wide guitars); below 150 Hz above +0.9.
- Low-mids band no higher than the Bass band.
- High-mids band: the vocals stand out over the guitars in the choruses.
