What it is and how it works
Overdrive is a moderate, dynamic distortion: played softly the sound stays almost clean, played hard it "breaks up". It comes from tube guitar amps pushed past their limit and from the pedals that imitate them. Technically it is soft clipping: in classic pedals two diodes in the operational amplifier's feedback loop round off the peaks; often asymmetrically (different diodes), to get even harmonics too.
The reference pedal is the Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS808, TS9): besides the soft clipping, it has a characteristic mid boost around 700–800 Hz and a bass cut before the distortion, which makes the guitar clear and "focused". Others: Boss SD-1/OD-1, Klon Centaur (a "transparent" overdrive with a lot of clean signal blended in), Fulltone OCD (toward distortion), overdrives of amp crunch channels (Marshall, Vox, Fender).
Parameters one by one
- Drive / Gain: amount of clipping. Low = light "crunch", high = full overdrive.
- Tone: low-pass filter or tilt after the distortion: darker or brighter.
- Level / Output: output volume (in pedals it's often used to push the amp: "boost").
- Pre-filter / Pre-EQ: filtering before the distortion changes everything: removing bass before (TS) = less mud and intermodulation; removing highs before (Pre Band in Fruity Blood Overdrive) = softer distortion.
- Post-filter: removes the fizz (Post Filter in Fruity Blood Overdrive, LP 6–10 kHz).
- Mix / Blend: essential for bass and 808 (clean + overdrive).
- Asymmetry/bias: more even harmonics.
Fruity Blood Overdrive (FL Studio)
- Pre Band: how much low-pass filtering before the distortion (reduces the highs that become harsh).
- Color: cutoff frequency of the Pre Band.
- Pre Amp: amount of overdrive; raising it lowers Post Gain.
- x100: multiplies the Pre Amp power by 100, useful on single instruments (strong distortion).
- Post Filter: low-pass after the distortion to clean up.
- Post Gain: final level reduction (at most the level stays the same as the original).
Starting point on 808: low Pre Band, Pre Amp 20–40%, x100 off, Post Filter 8–10 kHz, Post Gain for matched volume. On clean guitar: x100 on, Pre Amp 10–30%, Post Filter 5–7 kHz.
Other stock options: Hardcore (guitar multi-effect with overdrive and pedal distortions, amp and cab), Distructor (Blood Overdrive model, AMP/CAB to simulate the amplifier), Fruity WaveShaper.
Third party
FabFilter Saturn 2 (Amp, Tube modes), Soundtoys Decapitator and Devil-Loc, iZotope Trash, Kilohearts Distortion, Native Instruments Guitar Rig, IK Amplitube, Neural DSP, free emulations like TSE 808, Airwindows (free).
When to use it and on what
- Guitars: rock, blues, indie crunch; overdrive in front of an already pushed amp for more sustain (stack).
- Electric bass: parallel overdrive (clean for the lows, overdrive filtered above 200–300 Hz) for presence in a rock and metal mix.
- 808 and synth bass: overdrive for audibility, aggressiveness, "growl". In trap and drill it is part of the sound.
- Vocals: light overdrive for rock vocals, "megaphone" effect in combination with a band-pass.
- Organ (Leslie and pushed preamp), Rhodes and Wurli (tube amp), synth leads.
- Drums: overdrive on snare or drum bus in parallel for energy.
Starting settings
| Source | Drive | Filters | Mix | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crunch guitar | medium | pre-HP 100–200 Hz, post-LP 6–8 kHz | 100% | TS-style mid boost at 700–800 Hz |
| Rock/metal bass | medium-high | HP 250 Hz on the distorted path | 30–50% (parallel path) | clean sub |
| Trap 808 | low-medium | post-LP 8–10 kHz | 100% or parallel | check the perceived tuning |
| Synth bass | medium | pre-LP for less fizz | 50–100% | — |
| Rock vocals | low | band-pass 300 Hz–5 kHz | 20–40% | presence effect |
| Rhodes | low-medium | post-LP 8 kHz | 100% | amp sound |
| Drum bus | medium | HP 80 Hz on the distorted path | 15–30% | energy |
By genre
- Rock, blues, indie: crunch guitars and overdrive as the foundation.
- Trap, drill, phonk: overdrive/saturation on 808 and cowbell (phonk).
- Funk and soul: pushed Rhodes and organ.
- Hip hop: drum bus with parallel overdrive.
- Electronic: synth bass with overdrive and filter.
Common mistakes
- Overdriving the 808 without filtering: the harmonics and intermodulation make the pitch confusing (especially with slides and chords on top).
- Overdrive on bass without parallel: the sub is lost.
- Too many overdrive stages (pedal + amp + plugin): compressed, flat sound.
- Not using the Post Filter: digital fizz above 8 kHz.
How to hear it
- Play/program the same note with low and high velocity: the overdrive should change character (dynamic).
- On 808: listen on a phone speaker with and without overdrive: with the overdrive the bass line becomes readable.
Starting settings
| Parameter | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drive | Low for crunch, medium for full overdrive | Dynamics preserved. |
| Pre-filter | HP 100–200 Hz (guitar), light LP (Pre Band) | Less mud, less harshness. |
| Post-filter | LP 5–10 kHz | Removes the fizz. |
| Mix on bass/808 | 30–100% (parallel with clean sub) | Audibility without losing weight. |
| Fruity Blood Overdrive x100 | On for single pushed instruments | Much stronger distortion. |
Frequencies to watch
| Range | What to do |
|---|---|
| 40–100 Hz | Bass and 808 sub: keep it clean (parallel or multiband). |
| 700–800 Hz | Typical Tube Screamer mid boost: guitars clear in the mix. |
| 1–4 kHz | Bite and aggressiveness of the overdrive. |
| Above 6–8 kHz | Fizz: Post Filter / LP. |
Example chain
| Step | Tool | Settings | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre EQ | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 | HP or LP depending on the source | Decides what to distort. |
| Overdrive | Fruity Blood Overdrive / Hardcore / Distructor / Saturn 2 / Decapitator | Medium drive, Post Filter 6–10 kHz | Character. |
| Amp/cab (guitars) | Distructor AMP/CAB / Guitar Rig / Amplitube / Neural DSP | 4x12 or 1x12 cabinet | Shapes the response. |
| Post EQ | Fruity Parametric EQ 2 | −2/−4 dB at 2–4 kHz if harsh, LP 10 kHz | Cleanup. |
| Compression | Fruity Compressor / 1176 | Light GR (the overdrive already compresses) | Stable level. |
How to check the result
- Spectrum: harmonics added between 200 Hz and 5 kHz; energy above 10 kHz contained.
- On 808/bass: sub level (40–60 Hz) unchanged within 1 dB after the parallel overdrive.
- Crest factor: drops by 2–5 dB on guitars and basses (normal for overdrive).
- Perceived tuning of the 808 stable: no note that seems out of tune after the distortion (check with a tuner).
