How to play it and where it comes from
Darkwave and coldwave (from the early 1980s to Molchat Doma, Boy Harsher, She Past Away) between 110 and 150: dry, mechanical drum machine (TR-606/808, DR-55, LinnDrum), kick in four or in eighths, snare on 2 and 4 with wide reverb, closed hats in sixteenths with open hat on the offbeats, eighth-note bass on top. Rigid feel, swing 0. Variants: motorik (kick in eighths, see r-motorik for rock), “half-time” post-punk with snare on 3, end-of-phrase toms with gated reverb.
