How to play it and where it comes from
Chillwave (Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Neon Indian, 2009–2011) between 80 and 115: simple 1980s drum machine (kick on 1, 3, “3 and”, clap on 2 and 4 with long reverb), hat on the offbeats, soft shaker. Everything goes through low-pass filters, tape saturation and a marked sidechain of the pad to the kick (“pumping”). Variants: kick in four, closer to synth-pop, slow hip hop beat with swing (Toro y Moi), drum loop sampled from old records.
