How to play it and where it comes from

Boogie (1979–1986: D Train's “You're the One for Me”, Kashif, The Peech Boys, Rene & Angela, The System, Imagination; later Dâm-Funk and Chromeo as a revival). Drums often electronic (LinnDrum LM-1/LM-2, Oberheim DMX, Roland TR-808) or live with an overdubbed clap: kick no longer a rigid four but syncopated (1, the “and” of 2, the “and” of 3), snare and clap together on 2 and 4, hi-hat in sixteenths with light swing (15), openings on the offbeats. The synth bass (Minimoog, Prophet-5, Oberheim) plays in octaves and sixteenths. Tempos 100–120, slower than disco. Variants: kick in four in the more danceable tracks (Italo/hi-NRG), 808 cowbell on the tags, Simmons toms in the fills.
