Definition
Transient shaping independently modifies the attack phase and the sustain phase of a sound, without depending on the absolute level of the signal. The classic implementation uses two envelope followers on the same signal:
- a fast envelope E_f (attack 0.1–1 ms) that follows the transient immediately;
- a slow envelope E_s (attack 10–50 ms) that arrives later.
During the transient E_f exceeds E_s: the difference D = E_f − E_s (in dB) measures how much the sound is growing and drives the attack gain, g_A = k_A · max(0, D). In the tail E_s exceeds E_f (the sound is decaying): the opposite difference drives the sustain gain, g_S = k_S · max(0, −D). k_A and k_S are the Attack and Sustain controls, positive to emphasize, negative to attenuate. Because the control depends on the ratio between the two envelopes and not on a threshold, the processor reacts the same way on loud and soft hits. Some models add a threshold, band splitting or a filter on the detector.
Parameters and units
- Attack: ±dB (or ±%), typically from −15 to +15 dB.
- Sustain: ±dB, from −15 to +15 dB.
- Length / attack release: duration of the zone considered attack, 5–50 ms.
- Detector filter / band: limits the action to a frequency range (for example 2–6 kHz on the snare attack).
- Output: level compensation.
- Mix: percentage of processed signal.
Musical function
The transient shaper gives punch to kick and snare without compression, reduces the ambience of room and overhead microphones (negative sustain), lengthens the tails of percussion and cymbals (positive sustain), makes acoustic guitars and picking more defined, and controls the click of a slap bass. Compared with a compressor, it does not require adjusting the threshold for each dynamic level of the performance and does not change the average level in a way that depends on the intensity of the hit.
Practical example
Acoustic snare, initial crest factor 15 dB:
| Setting | Measured effect |
|---|---|
| Attack +4 dB | peak +3.5 dB, crest factor 18 dB |
| Sustain −3 dB | ring and room tail −3 dB, RMS −1.5 dB |
| Output −2 dB | peak brought back to the starting level +1.5 dB |
The hit stands out by 3 dB over the body and the room is reduced; the peak grows by 1.5 dB and must be considered in the drum bus gain staging. On room microphones with sustain +5 dB the tail lengthens by about a third and the drums sound wider.
Common mistakes
- High positive attack on signals that are already saturated or clipped: clicks and distortion appear.
- Ignoring the increase in peaks: an attack of +6 dB can push the bus into clipping.
- Positive sustain on tracks with noise or bleed: it also raises the noise and the bleed from other instruments.
- Using the transient shaper on the whole mix without control: it alters the balance among all the instruments at once.
- Stacking a transient shaper and a slow-attack compressor with the same goal, resulting in an exaggerated transient.
How to check it
- App analysis: analyze the track before and after; positive attack increases Sample peak and Crest factor (peak − RMS) while leaving the RMS almost unchanged; negative sustain lowers the RMS and raises the crest factor.
- Waveform: compare the waveform before and after in the Playlist: the attack should stick out with no flattening at the top.
- Bus: check the Sample peak of the drum bus after the intervention and correct the gain staging.
- Loudness-matched listening: compensate the output so that the track's loudness remains unchanged.
Starting settings
| Parameter | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Snare / kick | Attack +2/+6 dB | Punch of the hit without compression. |
| Room and overhead microphones | Sustain −3/−6 dB | Less ambience and more definition. |
| Cymbal and percussion tails | Sustain +2/+5 dB | Wider, longer sound. |
| Acoustic guitar | Attack +2/+3 dB | More defined pick attack. |
| Slap bass / click | Attack −2/−4 dB | Less intrusive click. |
| Compensation | Output equal to the loudness increase | Correct comparison against bypass. |
How to check the result
- Sample peak of the bus after the transient shaper still ≤ −6 dBFS.
- Crest factor of the track increased by no more than 4 dB with positive attack.
- No click or distortion on the loudest hits when listening in solo and in the mix.
- Integrated loudness of the track unchanged within 0.5 LU in bypass.
