History and character
Electropop is the electronic, colorful and often “strange” strand of K-pop: it runs from the bubblegum of Girls' Generation (Gee, 2009, synth-pop and a four-on-the-floor kick with a sing-song hook) and the “concept” pop of f(x) (Electric Shock, 4 Walls, produced with European writers) through Red Velvet (Russian Roulette, Psycho), TWICE (TT, Fancy), IVE, NewJeans and ILLIT. It blends synth-pop, house, future bass, tropical, moombahton, jersey club and R&B with very singable melodies and harmony that is often more sophisticated than that of the average Western pop (sevenths, modulations, chromaticism).
The agencies have distinct styles. SM (f(x), Red Velvet, aespa) loves experimental, “theatrical” electropop, with sudden section changes and many European and Scandinavian writers (for example Thomas Troelsen, co-producer of SHINee's Sherlock); Red Velvet has alternated a “Red” side (bright, strange pop) and a “Velvet” side (R&B). JYP (TWICE, ITZY, NMIXX) favors simple, immediate hooks, with many Swedish and British writers (TT and Fancy). HYBE/ADOR (NewJeans) brought a soft, nostalgic electropop, produced by 250 with 1990s, Baltimore and jersey club influences, moombahton and R&B (Hype Boy, E minor, 100 BPM).
Aesthetic: toy-like sounds, bright synths, vocal samples, contrasts between sweet and dark parts, repeated hooks with point choreography, a glossy, heavily compressed production but with plenty of room for the vocals.
Scales and keys
Major (Ionian) — bubblegum and bright concepts
- Formula: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (T T S T T T S). In Bb: Bb C D Eb F G A.
- Characteristic note: major 3rd and leading tone: cheerfulness.
- Chords: I Bb – ii Cm – iii Dm – IV Eb – V F – vi Gm – vii° Adim; with sevenths Bbmaj7 Cm7 Dm7 Ebmaj7 F7 Gm7.
- Use: Gee, TT and many TWICE songs; the royal road in the pre-choruses.
- Mistakes: too much harmonic simplicity without colors: add 7th/9th to the IV and vi.
Natural minor (Aeolian) — “dark” electropop
- Formula: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. In E: E F# G A B C D.
- Chords: i Em – III G – iv Am – v Bm – VI C – VII D.
- Use: Red Velvet — Psycho, NewJeans — Hype Boy (E minor).
Dorian
- Formula: 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. In D Dorian: D E F G A B C.
- Characteristic note: major 6th (B): major IV (G).
- Chords (on the mode's scale): i Dm – ii Em – III F – IV G – v Am – vi° Bdim – VII C.
- Use: R&B-electro and Y2K songs, i7–IV7 vamp.
Lydian (“fairy-tale” color)
- Formula: 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7. In F Lydian: F G A B C D E.
- Use: the major II over a pedal (G/F) for dreamy intros and bridges in fantasy concepts.
Chromaticism and the whole-tone scale as an effect
Chromatic lines in the synths and whole-tone passages in “strange” intros (f(x), Red Velvet).
How to choose
Cute/bubblegum: major. Strange/dark: Aeolian with chromaticism. Y2K/R&B: Dorian. Fantasy: Lydian. The mode often changes between verse and chorus.
Harmony
Function
More sophisticated than Western dance-pop: pre-choruses with the royal road and secondary dominants, choruses on 4-chord loops with sevenths, bridges with a modulation or mode change, modulated final choruses. The verses may sit on a riff.
Techniques
- The royal road (IVmaj7–V7–iii7–vi) and its variants in the pre-choruses.
- Secondary dominants (III7 → vi).
- Parallel mode change (minor verse, major chorus on the same tonic).
- “Strange” chords for surprise: major bII, augmented chords, slash chords.
- Modulations by a third or a half step between sections.
Voicing
Synth stabs and plucks with triads and sevenths in a high register (C4–C6), wide pads, bass often holding a pedal.
Typical progressions
| Name | Key | Chords | Degrees | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bubblegum royal road | Bb major | Ebmaj7 F7 Dm7 Gm7 | IVmaj7 V7 iii7 vi7 | The favorite progression of Korean and Japanese idol pop: it climbs, falls to the vi and restarts. |
| Major bubblegum | C major | C Am F G | I vi IV V | A doo-wop progression for sing-song hooks (Gee style). |
| Dark electro | E minor | Em C G D | i VI III VII | A base for darker, more nostalgic songs (NewJeans style, Red Velvet Psycho). |
| Secondary dominant | D major | Gmaj7 A7 F#7 Bm7 | IVmaj7 V7 V7/vi vi7 | The F#7 makes the vi more dramatic: a pre-chorus that pushes. |
| Mode change | G | Gm Eb F Gm G Em C D | i VI VII i → I vi IV V | Minor verse and major chorus on the same tonic: a “sun coming out” effect. |
| Y2K Dorian vamp | D Dorian | Dm9 G13 | i9 IV13 | 1990s–2000s electronic R&B: soft and hypnotic. |
| bII surprise | C major | C Db C G | I bII I V | The Db major a half step up is a “strange” hit in the f(x)/Red Velvet manner. |
| Fairy-tale Lydian | F Lydian | F G/F Am G | I II/I iii II | The major II and the #4 give a fairy-tale color. |
Rhythm and groove
Dance-pop groove (four-on-the-floor kick with open hat on the offbeats) in the bubblegum versions; future bass (half-time with chord swells) in the emotional choruses; moombahton (four-on-the-floor kick + dembow snare, ~100–110 BPM) and jersey club (triplet kick and sampled creaking-bed sounds, 130–140 BPM) in the more recent productions; 1990s house. Swing 0–10%. Feel changes between sections as in the rest of K-pop.
Drums
Kick
Dance: four-on-the-floor (steps 1, 5, 9, 13). Moombahton: four-on-the-floor with a dembow snare (steps 4, 7, 12, 15). Jersey club: kick in triplets/groups of five (1, 4, 7, 9, 11 in approximate sixteenth notes). Future bass: half-time (1, 11).
Snare and clap
Clap on 2 and 4 (dance), on 3 (future bass), dry claps and snaps; in cute songs, layers of toy sounds and snaps.
Hi-hat and percussion
Hats in sixteenth notes, open hat on the offbeats, shaker; toy percussion (bells, xylophone, toy piano), rhythmic vocal chops.
Interaction
The bass is sidechained to the kick; the many voices alternate over a clear, unobtrusive beat.
By section
Light verse; pre-chorus with a build (snare roll, kick removed); full chorus with point choreography; post-chorus with vocal chops; dance break with a new groove; half-time bridge.
Fills and sounds
Risers, sweeps, stuttering vocal chops, stops. Bright, short sounds, modern kicks, layered claps. Mistakes: too many toy sounds covering the vocals.
Bass
- Sound: synth (square, filtered saw, sine), house organ-bass, soft 808 in R&B songs.
- Notes: root and octave, pedal in the pre-choruses, melodic lines in R&B songs.
- Relationship with the kick: 3–5 dB sidechain.
- Examples: Girls' Generation — Gee (dance synth bass), NewJeans — Hype Boy (soft bass with R&B/moombahton influence).
Harmonic instruments
Synth stabs and plucks, future bass pads (chord swells with sidechain), house piano, light funk guitars, toy piano, xylophone, bells, synthetic strings, harmonic vocal chops.
Melody and vocals
- Melody: sing-song, repeated hooks (often English words or onomatopoeia), mid-high register, melodic pre-choruses with harmonies, choruses with call-and-response between members.
- Vocals: clear timbres, sweet or “cool” depending on the concept; 3–4-part harmonies; light or spoken rap.
- Effects: light Auto-Tune, vocal chops, pitch shift, phone filters, 1/8 delay.
Instruments
Multiple voices, drum machine and samples, synth bass, synths (pad, stab, pluck, lead), piano, toy piano and toy percussion, funk guitars, vocal chops, FX.
Drum patterns
Synths and sounds
- Jun-6 V — Pads and plucks: Pads with chorus and soft plucks for nostalgic songs (NewJeans).
- Prophet-5 V — Stabs and chords: Bright stabs for bubblegum.
- DX7 V — Bell, mallet, e-piano: FM bells and marimbas for elegant “toy” sounds.
- Jup-8 V — Pad and brass: Wide pads for the choruses.
- Mini V — Synth bass: Clean dance basses.
- Korg MS-20 V — Leads and FX: Strange leads and sweeps for concept songs.
- Augmented Voices — Vocal pad: Vocal pads and chops for the post-choruses.

Vocals
Chain per member (correction → EQ → 1176 → de-esser → LA-2A), a different presence EQ for each member, short plate and tempo-synced delay; compressed, wide harmonies; gang vocal on a dedicated bus.
FX
Vocal chops on a bus with HP 200 Hz and sidechain.
Buses and groups
Drum bus 2–3 dB, vocal bus 2 dB, music bus with dynamic ducking from the vocals.
Sidechain
Kick → bass and pads (3–5 dB); vocals → synths (1–3 dB at 2–4 kHz).
Master
Chain EQ → compressor 1–2 dB → clipper → limiter. Target −7/−5 LUFS (NewJeans and softer songs −8/−7), true peak ≤ −1 dBTP, PLR 7–9 dB.
Common mistakes
Harsh high synths that fatigue the ear; vocals that all sound the same; too many toy sounds; bass that disappears on phones.
