How to play it and where it comes from
The groove of modern worship (Hillsong United, Bethel Music, Elevation Worship, Chris Tomlin; typical tempos 68–80, or 120–140 for the up-tempo songs). Two bars: the first is the “build” of the pre-chorus or bridge, with low tom in eighths and kick on the quarter notes growing in dynamics (often after an intro with only kick on the quarters, a “heartbeat”); the second is the full chorus with crash on 1, snare on 2 and 4 (or half time, only on 3), syncopated kick and hi-hat/ride in eighths. Click and loops (pads, tracks sequenced from Ableton/MultiTracks) are standard practice live. Variants: “half-time” sections in the bridge, sixteenth-note snare for the last build, toms on the quarter notes with cymbal swells.
