How to play it and where it comes from
Boom bap meets jazz (A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, Guru's Jazzmatazz): kick on 1, the last sixteenth of 2, the "and" of 3; snare on 2 and 4. The ride plays the jazz "spang-a-lang" (1, 2-a, 3, 4-a): with swing 35 the "a" approaches the third eighth of a triplet. Foot hi-hat on 2 and 4 (chh). The groove is warm, with lots of air for sampled double bass, horns and Rhodes. Variants: brushes instead of snare, rim ghost notes, kick that skips to leave room for the loop.
