How to play it and where it comes from

Hard trance groove (Belgium/Germany/the Netherlands 1993–97, then UK and Italy: Jones & Stephenson, Yves Deruyter, Mauro Picotto, Scot Project) between 140 and 150: long, distorted kick on the quarter notes with plenty of reverb or "rumble", bass on the offbeat (808 lane) — sometimes in "rolling" sixteenths (.xxx) —, clap and snare layered on 2 and 4, open hat on the offbeat, sixteenth-note hats and eighth-note ride for drive. Crash on 1 of every 8-bar phrase. The breaks use accelerating snare rolls (quarters → eighths → sixteenths → 1/32) with rising pitch. Variants: double-hit kick on the last beat (x.x.) before the drop, offbeat bass with two notes per beat, ride only in the drop.
